ILP resolution: Meghalaya Govt awaits response from Shah to hold discussion

SHILLONG, Jan 9
The Meghalaya Government is waiting for the response from the Union Home Minister to fix the date of the meeting to discuss on the resolution adopted by the State Assembly to urge upon the Centre to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.
Talking to reporters here today, Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling said that Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday had called Delhi to fix an appointment with the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. “We are waiting to get a call from Delhi to confirm the date of the meeting with Amit Shah,” Dohling told reporters here today.
He said that the State Government’s delegation will rush to Delhi to meet the Union Home Minister to inform about the resolution adopted by the Assembly as soon the appointment is fixed.
“Personally, I have anxiously been waiting to see that ILP is implemented in the State since the time I was a student leader. Majority of the population wants that the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 to be implemented in the State,” Dohling said. Insisting that the State Government is serious on the issue to implement ILP, he, however, said that it will all depend on the Centre if they would approved the demand to implement ILP.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) is expected to announce its next phase of agitations on Friday since it is disappointed over the delay of the State to follow up with the Centre on the demand for implementation of the ILP in the State. “It is nearly three weeks since the Assembly had adopted a resolution to urge upon the Centre for implementation of the ILP under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873. We were told that the Govt delegation would be meeting Union Home Minister, Amit Shah after Christmas celebration. The meeting with the Union Home Minister is yet to be held even though we are in the second week of the New Year,” CoMSO chairman Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters here today. Asserting that they have not suspended their agitation, Kharjahrin said that they have only given the Government time to pursue on the resolution adopted by the Assembly to implement ILP in the State. “We will continue with the agitation till the time ILP is implemented in the State,” CoMSO chairman said.
