Mizoram JAC demands State Govt to resolve border dispute

AIZAWL, Oct 14 : Demanding to resolve the boundary issue with Assam, a Mizoram based Joint Action Committee on Inner line Reserve Forest Demand has asked the Mizoram government to set up a “boundary commission”. The JAC threatened to resort to indefinite agitation if the demand is not paid heed by the Mizoram government. The JAC said there was already a directive from the Central government to set up a boundary commission in this regard.
The committee’s demand has come after a farm hut was torched allegedly by the administration of Assam a few days ago in Mizoram’s Mamit district. It was also alleged that plantations were also destroyed by the Assam administration on the day. The incident was related to an inter state's boundary dispute.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Aizawl, JAC chairman F. Ngurbiakvela said they had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard when the latter visited Mizoram in 2018. The memorandum urged the Central government to set up a boundary commission to resolve the Assam-Mizoram boundary dispute. Responding to this memorandum, the Home Ministry had directed the Mizoram government and the Assam government and also the Surveyor General of India to present their respective views on the issue, according to the JAC. However, the Mizoram government did not pay any heed to this initiative of the Home Ministry, alleged the JAC.  
 The JAC then said had a boundary commission been set up there would not have any issue between the two states by now.
It then urged the Mizoram government to respond to the Central government’s initiative by October 21. “We have no other option but to resort to indefinite agitation,” the JAC added.
