IMPHAL, Oct 28 : An election rally of Opposition Congress party held at K Geljang village under Saitu AC was disrupted when some miscreants opened fire  in the air today.
An election meeting of Congress candidate Dr Lamtinthang Haokip was going on at K Geljang village when some suspected Kuki militants under Suspension of Operation pact fired five rounds of bullets at around 1 pm, thereby disrupting the meeting for sometime.
Later, the election rally was shifted to Twibul Public Ground, Kangchup area and it culminated without any further untoward incident.
Sources informed that police later recovered one empty case of 9 mm ammunition from K Geljang village.
"This is nothing but an act of cowardice, that too during the public meeting. I strongly condemn the act. I appeal to the Chief  Minister to act against such unlawful activities", said Lamtinthang Haokip.
"I am deeply appalled on hearing the incident at a public meeting of Dr Lamtinthang Haokip for the upcoming by-election to Saitu AC at K Geljang village today. He gave the best of his time in Delhi for the cause of the Kuki and tribal people in Delhi under my stewardship", said Paunou K Zou, former president of All India Tribal Students Association, Delhi.
Some local supporters of the Congress candidate expressed strong suspicion that ‘uncomfortable act’ was a handiwork of BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip and his supporters.
