IMPHAL, Oct 29: National People’s Party (NPP) National president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has asserted that NPP is a political party ‘made in the North East by the people of North East for the people of North East.’
He was speaking at the flag hoisting cum election rally of Khuraijam Loken who is fighting the by-election in Wangoi AC on NPP ticket.
Addressing the rally held today at the Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai residence of Loken, Conrad Sangma said that NPP has been working in line with the will and aspiration of the people of the North East since its establishment.
There are bigger political parties in the country but their perspective and agenda seldom cover the North East. All these big political parties have been marginalising the North East for decades, said the Meghalaya Chief Minister who arrived here specifically for the rally along with some of his Cabinet Ministers.
At the same time, there are regional political parties in the North East but they are unable to create any impact on the National politics. NPP was set up to fill this void. NPP would take up issues pertaining to the North East and fight for the people of the region, he continued.
With the blessing and support of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland, NPP has made it to the list of seven parties which have been recognised by the Election Commission of India as National political parties, Conrad Sangma told the gathering.
Among the seven political parties recognised by the ECI as National political parties, NPP is the only political party which took birth on the soil of the North East and works for the region, he claimed.
Most people, particularly youth have had first hand experience of what they encounter outside the North East region. It is of vital importance to build a common platform in order to fight such discrimination and harassment with a collective voice. One primary objective for the establishment of NPP is to fight for justice against discrimination and harassment meted out to people from the North East in mainland India, Conrad Sangma said.
Saying that it was his father and former NPP leader PA Sangma who introduced him to politics, Conrad Sangma conveyed that his late father used to advise him not to run after post and money but work tirelessly and selflessly for the welfare of the masses.
Contrary to what the former NPP leader advocated, the ex-MLA of Wangoi AC gave up the post of MLA in pursuit of Ministerial berth, said Conrad.
If somebody asks whether the ex-MLA of Wangoi AC is trustworthy, everybody would reply in the negative. The ex-MLA is a self-seeking man, said the NPP National president.
O Lukhoi who contested the last State Assembly election held in 2017 on Congress ticket is now fighting the by-election on BJP ticket while S Joy who fought the same election on BJP ticket is being sponsored by Congress, Conrad remarked.
He then questioned the leadership qualities of both the Congress and BJP candidates. He further asked the people of Wangoi AC if they want such men to represent them in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Now the people of Wangoi AC are given a second chance to elect the right representative. The man who would never betray people’s trust, and will stand true to his words and work selflessly for the mass is none other than NPP candidate Khuraijam Loken, Conrad asserted.
Khuraijam Loken said that he would never betray people’s trust or discriminate people based on political considerations.
All would be treated equally and everyone will get equal shares and opportunities, he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, YAS Minister Letpao Haokip, MLA L Jayantakumar, MLA N Kayisii, Meghalaya Power Minister James K Sangma and Meghalaya Works Minister Prestone Tynsong also attended and spoke at the rally.
