Shillong, Feb 16: The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), Rongjeng unit has raised complaints over the alleged ongoing cattle smuggling through Rongjeng village under East Garo Hills district.
In this regard, the ADE has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Garo Hills district Swapnil Tembe highlighting the alleged illegalities and informing him that their pleas for action in this matter have fallen on deaf ears till now. The cattle that are allegedly transported through trucks are destined for markets in Bangladesh through the border of South Garo Hills district where they are taken on a daily basis.
“Some parts of the border are unfenced and porous and some groups with vested interests have been using this to their advantage. At least 30-40 trucks are regularly coming from Assam and pass through Rongjeng on their way to the international border,” said ADE-Rongjeng president MM Sangma.
The ADE further alleged that some government agencies are also acting in connivance with the smugglers and allowing the movement of such vehicles, even without proper challans as required by law. The ADE also claimed that the cattle are routed through Rongara village in South Garo Hills district.
“These trucks don’t have the documents or challans for the cattle but are allowed to pass through by the government agencies that are meant to crack down on such illegal acts. It is shameful and against guidelines laid down by law,” alleged ADE secretary, B Sangma.
