SHILLONG, Feb 20: Social activist Nilberth Ch Marak, has submitted a complaint to the director of the Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary (AH&V) over the supply of raw meat for sale seeking that appropriate quality checks need to be undertaken before the same is certified safe for consumption.
“There are lots of complaints against suppliers of domestic animals for consumption (cows, goats, buffaloes, chicken) as traders are supplying the meat without having been tested for quality and without obtaining valid fitness certificates,” said the activist. He stated that most of these animals came from outside the state and did so without confirming to quality checks from competent authorities.
“Whether the animals are fit and healthy for consumption is unknown and this could be a source of diseases and ill health,” said Nilberth.
Through the complaint to the director, the activist sought steps to be initiated to ensure quality checks are undertaken by competent authorities before any form of meat is allowed for sale in various markets across Garo Hills.
