Senapati, Feb 22: The indefinite NH-2 blockade imposed on Friday was called off  early today at around 1.30 am after the release of arres-ted NSCN-IM cadre, Gideon.
Gideon, who was reportedly released from a police station located in Imphal, reached Senapati district headquarters at around 3.30 am and was handed over to civil bodies.
All stranded vehicles including commercial and private vehicles were given free passage after the news of release of Gideon was confirmed by the frontal organizations, who spearheaded the negotiations since the stand-off erupted on Thursday.
It may be noted that tension had gripped Senapati district since Thursday after physical confrontation broke out between 34 Assam Rifles personnel and NSCN-IM cadres followed by the latter snatching an AK-47 rifle from the AR. The rifle was later handed over to the AR through civil body organisations.
The public of Senapati district and CSOs including student bodies had condemned the AR action and alleged repeated provocation by 34 AR. They had imposed the indefinite NH-2 blockade demanding unconditional release of the NSCN-IM cadre.
Many have lamented that the incident has damaged the peaceful environment of the district.
"In the midst of positive Indo-Naga peace process and efforts to bring permanent solution in the region, such confrontations will only hamper the earnest call of the people for peace and harmony," said a public leader.
Yesterday, womenfolk had blocked the highway demanding immediate release of the cadre. Tyres and woods were burnt on the street and shops were shut.  AR vehicles were also damaged.
