Thongjao Village selected for pottery mission

Thoubal, Feb 23: Thanks to commendable efforts from Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIB), Thongjao Village under Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency has been selected for "Pottery Mission", said Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Limited (MNIDCO) Chairman, MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam during a pottery clay blunger distribution function held at Thongjao Community Hall, today.
The MLA continued that the machines used in pottery were distributed to 8 groups comprising of 10 women each.
Stating that different training programmes will also be conducted after establishing a pottery training centres this year, the MLA urged all concerned to submit the list of potters at the earliest to take benefit from the mission.
Though pottery is practised in other parts of the State too, Thongjao Village is the only village in Manipur where every household are indulged in pottery as a profession, he continued.
Pointing out that production and usage of plastics are hazardous to human health and environment, the MLA appealed the locals of Thongjao to contribute their share in fighting plastic pollution.
As at least 20, 000 disposable cups made of plastic are discarded daily in the surrounding areas of three Ima Keithels after consuming tea, providing disposable clay cups by the potters of Thongjao as a replacement for the plastic would make a huge difference, Dr Radheshyam said adding that there is no need for the potters to travel to Ima Keithels as officials of Khadi and Village Industries Board would come to their village to buy their products.
Today function organised by KVIB was also attended by its Vice-Chairman Y Nilamani Singh, members Sanajaoba, Dr Nishita Pebam; Ima Leishana Women Street Vendors Union president Nk Khemabati Leima and secretary Kh Sunita Devi.
