New Delhi, Mar 1
The Delhi Police on Sunday recovered two unidentified bodies from the Eastern Yamuna Canal in Gokalpuri. This is the same Yamuna canal that runs through riot-affected areas such as Jaffrabad, Yamuna Vihar, and Chand Bagh among others.
Delhi Police, however, said it is trying to ascertain if these deaths are related to the recent violence or cases of personal enmity.
The developments on Sunday take the total number of bodies recovered from the Yamuna canal to five. While one was fished out on Sunday morning, the other was found in the afternoon. Upon receiving a distress call from locals on February 28, Delhi Police had recovered two bodies from the same canal in Bhagirathi Vihar. These bodies were then shifted to the GTB hospital for identification purposes.
However, the first body to be fished out from this canal was that of 28-year-old Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma. Sharma's body was recovered from a drain in Chand Bagh where violence was reported on February 23, February 24 and February 25. Delhi Police registered a complaint against suspended AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain after Sharma’s family named him as an accused in their complaint. A preliminary post mortem report had suggested that Ankit Sharma was stabbed more than 30 times before his body was pushed into the canal.
Until Saturday, Delhi Police registered 167 FIRs. A total of 885 people have either been detained or arrested in connection with the North East district violence. The violence has claimed more than 40 lives, leaving over 200 people injured.
