Shillong, Apr 21: Guwahati based Voluntary Association for Social Upliftment (VASU) has provided dry rations to 80 artisans and their families in the Ampati and Mahendraganj areas of Meghalaya on Monday.
The artisans are residents of Kumligaon, Sipragaon, Samatigaon, Sulguri, Betasingh, Nirghini Kharugaon in the Ampati area besides other villages near Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills district.
This aid was provided to these artisans who are struggling to cope with the problems that have come up in the wake of the current nationwide lockdown on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The consequences of the pan-India lockdown have had a detrimental effect, especially on those belonging to the poorer sections of the society, migrant labourers, daily-wage earners, artisans and homeless. They are struggling to meet their daily survival needs, including essentials like food,” VASU CEO, Shabnam Mohan Raj said.
Raj also informed of the demise of one of the active donors, Ramendra Sarkar of Saptarshi Industries who passed away yesterday due to severe pneumonia and a heart attack in the Apollo Hospitals, Guwahati.
“We all will remember him as an extraordinary man with a penchant to support the less fortunate. We all mourn deeply his passing as his was a life of service, love, compassion and excellence. May he rest in peace,” she said.
It may be noted here that VASU is a registered NGO from Guwahati. VASU runs a Training & Production centre in apparel making in Mahendraganj and for Handloom Weaving centre in Kumligaon in South West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, to enhance livelihood opportunities and capacity building for the poor artisans.
