Mizo students demand accused be handed over

AIZAWL, Apr 22: Mizoram students on Wednesday demanded from Tripura government that those accused of the alleged assault incident of IRB personnel of Mizoram be handed over to Mizoram police.
Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex student body of Mizoram, the accused should be tried in Mizoram as the incident occurred in Mizoram.  According to reports, a group of people had allegedly assaulted two personnel of IR Battalion of Mizoram, who were guarding border at Zomuantlang in west Mizoram’s Mamit district along the Mizoram-Tripura border on last Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred when four local volunteers, two of them from Tripura, who were part of a village task force which guarded the inter-state border, were asked to stop playing cards and remain vigil. The four men incited their friends from a border village on Tripura side and allegedly beaten up the two IRB personnel, who were guarding the inter-state border to prevent cross border movement in the wake of novel coronavirus pandemic, police further said.
The victims---C. Lalhruaitluanga and R. Zairemmawia of 5th Battalion of Indian Reserve were posted at Kawnpui on the Mizoram-Tripura border. They were admitted in Aizawl civil hospital on Sunday and were discharged on Monday, police said. Several organisations and political parties, including state BJP condemned the incident and demanded stringent punishment against those involved in the incident.
The reports said that Tripura police arrested three accused in connection with the incident on last Sunday evening. They have been identified as Santilal Chakma (31), Bimal Chakma (19) and Mohanlal Chakma (27), all from Kawnpui-I village in Tripura, the police officer said. He also said that one accused escaped while doing a medical check-up in a hospital on Sunday night.
