Tura, May 6: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) of East Garo Hills along with other NGOs from the region have written to the Deputy Commissioner of the district alleging that there are cases of lockdown violation by vendors bringing fish, dry fish, vegetables from other areas while seeking strong action against them.
“They are violating necessary protocols framed by the Health & Family Welfare Govt. of Meghalaya on Covid-19,” said GSU-East Garo Hills assistant general secretary, Tattara SN Marak.
According to the GSU, the suppliers are bringing these items directly from Assam.
“The dangerous part is that the vegetables, fishes and other essential commodities are being brought from the Covid-19 red zone areas like Goalpara, Krishnai and others. Not only that, the people from this red zone are accompanying things up to here and mingling with the local vendors and the people as well,” he added.
Marak also alleged that the transport is taking place during odd hours to avoid the lockdown protocols and necessary checking. They come in the night and leave in the night after mingling with locals through the day.
The GSU has requested that a proper inquiry be done in the matter and strict action be taken against the perpetrators before Covid-19 spreads to Garo Hills.
