Thoubal, Jul 6: Former Minister Moirangthem Hemanta has categorically stated that farmers in the State are not getting enough fertilizers for growing paddies successfully because of the insincere attitude of the State Government.
Notably, Moirangthem Hemanta is a chief functionary of Wangjing Tentha Farmers Development Association (WATEFADEAS).
Speaking to media persons during a press meet held at his residence at Tentha, Hemanta lamented that the incumbent Agriculture Minister should resign from his post as he failed to address the plight and grievances of many farmers.
If the Agriculture Minister doesn't resign on his term than the Chief Minister N Biren should intervene and take actions that deem fit like he had done in the past by removing portfolios of certain Ministers, the former Minister suggested and maintained that farmer community will consider N Biren as a nepotist leader if he fails to take actions against the Minister who is ignorant about the issues surrounding the farmers.
Hemanta also said that he was pained to witness several farmers standing in a queue in front of Agriculture Office, Thoubal this morning just to get a bag of fertilizer.
Though farmers could not get the required amount of urea fertilizers at a rate fixed by the Government (Rs 266.80 ) for their fields, it is widely available at open markets at around Rs 1,000 per bag, the former Minister claimed and asked if the State Government is earning profit at this trying times by colluding with businessmen.
Questioning what happened to the Go to Village Mission which was launched to reach out to its citizens at their doorsteps, he appealed to the State Government to distribute fertilizers to farmers by visiting them at their respective villages.
Moirangthem Hemanta also stated that a pragmatic approach from the State Government is essential to save people who earn for their bread and butter from agricultural activities.
