IMPHAL, Jul 7: With 71 drivers testing negative for COVID-19, the quarantine centre opened exclusively for the drivers has been shut down, said Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) president H Ranjit today.
Speaking to media persons at TDC's office at MG Avenue, H Ranjit recalled that the drivers and members of the council had  volunteered and carried out evacuation missions ferrying thousands of returnees from Jiribam to different districts in the State amid the COVID-19 pandemic since May 13.
Earlier, more than 100 drivers under quarantine had tested negative and were sent home for further 14 days quarantine. With 71 more tested negative today, they have been sent home for further quarantine, he said adding the drivers and volunteers have emerged victorious against the virus.
Lauding the drivers for their service amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he said locals should not stigmatise the drivers when they come home. They should be given the respect they deserve for their service. Localities and clubs should welcome them and provide all possible assistance for them to successfully complete the 14-day home quarantine period, he added.
Commenting on the rising number of cases in Jiribam district, Ranjit said TDC and drivers would continue their service sincerely following the COVID safety protocols. Appealing the drivers/truckers to wear face masks, use hand sanitiser and maintain physical distancing, he said authorities concerned of the Government should also ramp up the COVID-19 screening works at ISBT and other screening points for truckers.
To effectively carry out the screening and speed up the process, ISBT should have more counters, he said seeking the attention of the authorities concerned.
