IMPHAL, Jul 7: A Division Bench of High Court of Manipur on Tuesday heard a cluster of writ petitions related to anti-defection law filed against the Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly and fixed July 17 for further hearing.
The Division bench comprising of Justice Lanusungkum Jamir and Justice Ahanthem Bimol heard the cases through video conferencing and served notice on the respondents including the Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly and two others and gave them 10 days to file counter affidavits.
The writ petitions were filed  by Congress MLAs including those disqualified before the Rajya Sabha election recently.
Regarding the writ petitions filed by three disqualified MLAs, Yengkhom Surchandra, Sanasam Bira and Ksh Biren, the Court heard the submissions of Senior Advocate HS Paonam appearing for the petitioners, and Senior Advocate PS Narasimha and Additional Advocate General H Lenin appearing for the Speaker and two others and fixed July 17 for next hearing. The Court gave 10 days time to the respondents to file counter affidavits.
About the writ petitions filed by Congress MLAs, K Ranjit, O Surjakumar and K Meghachandra against the Speaker and two others, the Court  issued notice to the respondents and fixed July 17 for further hearing.
Meanwhile, the writ petition filed by Tongbram Robindro, ex-MLA Thanga AC has been listed for hearing tomorrow as the matter was not taken up today due to paucity of time.
During the hearing today, the bench also disposed of another writ petition filed by ex-MLA Tongbram Robindro after his Counsel prayed for withdrawal of the same as he has filed  a subsequent petition.
On the other hand, the Court allowed Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to implead as a private respondent on the writ petition filed by ex-MLA Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC S Subhaschandra against Manipur Legislative Assembly. The Court listed the matter for hearing on July 17.
