COVID-19 cases surge by 40, recovery at 53.91 pc

IMPHAL, Jul 7: Keeping with the upward trend, 40 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the State during the last 24 hours.
According to a press release issued by Additional Director (Health) and COVID-19 Common Control Room spokesman Dr Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang, 40 people (29 males and 11 females) tested positive for COVID-19 at JNIMS (33) and RIMS (7) during the last 24 hours.
The total COVID-19 tally has reached 1430 in the State and it includes 659 active cases. With 771 people already recovered from the contagion, the recovery rate stands at 53.91 per cent.
Of the 40 people tested positive during the last 24 hours, 26 belong to Senapati, five to Kangpokpi, five to Jiribam, two to Kakching and two to Imphal East and Churachandpur.
All the five positive cases from Jiribam are police personnel.
The number of police and VDF personnel who have been tested positive for COVID-19 in Jiribam district has reached 41.
Meanwhile, 37 people who were undergoing treatment for COVID-19 have been discharged from CCC Meitram (23), CCC Ukhrul (1), CCC Thoubal (5), RIMS (1) and JNIMS (7).
On the other hand, Jackie, the pet dog belonging to a family of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai, has been taken to an animal shelter of Veterinary Department today after all the members of the family tested positive for COVID-19.
Five members of the People for Animals, Manipur went to the house at around 10.30 am today and brought Jackie to the Veterinary Department.
After three members of the family including an eight year old girl tested positive for COVID-19, Imphal West District Magistrate declared Thangmeiband Polem Leikai as a containment zone.
According to information received from Veterinary Department, Jackie has been kept in an animal shelter of the State Animal Welfare Board located at Porompat. It is said that swab sample of the dog may be collected and tested for COVID-19 within the next couple of days.
