Fish breeding training starts

IMPHAL, Jul 8: A three day training programme on  'induced breeding of fishes' is being  organised exclusively for women by the Directorate of Extension Education, CAU Lamphelpat under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Speaking on the inaugural day today, Director of Fisheries N Gojendro Singh said the demand for fish in the State cannot  be met if only the traditional method of fish breeding is followed.
"To meet the demands quality seeds are required. It is very important that we produce quality seeds," he stated. 
Director of Extension Education, CAU, Prof RK Saha said it is the first time the training is being conducted exclusively for women.
He stressed on the importance of ornamental fish for aquariums. 
Director of Instruction, Dr S Basanta said Manipuri women are very hardworking and play a very important role in shaping the society. "This training for women will help increase the productivity of the State," he said. 
"Fish farming is very suitable for Manipur. A fish farm  of a size of one hectare can earn upto to Rs 15 lakh. "We need to increase the productivity of fish, as the fish produce in the State is not enough to meet the demand.
"Fish breeding is very easy and it is a very profitable business however a certain set of skills are required," he added. 
Scientist Dr W Chwar,  said we have many educated unemployed women who are mostly engaged in handloom  and handicrafts to earn an income. This skill of fish breeding will be another added skill.
