IMPHAL, Jan 14: A 42-year-old man has been held responsible for the death of his wife and sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by the Court of District and Sessions Judge, Ukhrul yesterday.
The same Court of W Tonen Meitei had on December 30 last convicted Themmithan Phungchamnao of Langdang village, Ukhrul for offence under Section 304 Part-II for assaulting his wife to death on May 2, 2015.
The case was on against the convict based on a complaint lodged by the father of the victim with the Ukhrul Police Station that his daughter who was married to the convict was beaten to death by the convict in an inhuman manner using sticks.
The victim sustained multiple injuries and died the next day at around 4 am on May 2, 2015 at their residence at Narep Meizailung Ukhrul.
Charges were framed under Section 302 and 34 IPC on September 14, 2017.
The Court had observed that in causing injuries to the deceased the convict had no motive or intention to cause death and the assault resulted purely out of anger and under the effect of alcohol. The Court had fixed January 13 for sentence hearing.
Hearing the sentence today, the Court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict.
