IMPHAL, Jan 16: The 74 Medical Officers who were recruited on contractual basis to fight COVID-19 in the frontline should be given their monthly remuneration on time, said the United People’s Front  Manipur.
In a statement, the UPFM said that even though the Medical Officers have been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic for months, they have been paid remuneration of only one month till today.
In Manipur, COVID-19 has infected a total of about 28,811 people and killed 365. As the disease spread across the State, the Government had made the decision to add more manpower to effectively face the pandemic.
After a Cabinet decision on May 22 last year, the Government issued a notice on August 5 (2020) to recruit 100 Medical Officers on contractual basis to be engaged in COVID-19 related duties. As per the notice, the MOs were entitled to Rs 2,500 per (duty) day.
Later in August, 74 Medical Officers were recruited and since then they are engaged in Covid related duties even though they have been paid remuneration for only one month, said UPFM.
Seeking the attention of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, UPFM said the Medical Officers should be paid their (due) remuneration on time.
Failure to  address their plight may discourage the Medical Officers to work in the frontline, it added.
