Ukhrul, Nov 24 : Ukhrul AC MLA Alfred Arthur Kanngam said that reviving Shirui Lily football tournament will help re-invigorate the true essence of oneness and togetherness.
Alfred, who is also the president of Ukhrul District Sport Association (UDSA) was speaking at the opening ceremony of 29th Shirui Lily National football tournament at Ukhrul district headquarters. The MLA urged the people of Ukhrul to uphold the quality of Tangkhul hospitality towards all guests and visitors partaking in the football tournament.
Stating that inclusiveness and togetherness will surely pave a way towards development, he said that sports give us a clearer picture on various perspectives, be it healthy living or sense of common responsibility at large.
He also urged all participating teams to uphold fair play and give their best.
And in the meantime, the organiser of the tournament, UDSA felicitated Wungayam Muirangwo, Hormipam Ruivah and Chanso Horam for representing the State and particularly Ukhrul district in the Indian Super League.
Shanthing Shingnaisui, who is the first Tangkhul woman referee was also feted at the occasion.
Later, chief guest of the programme and football promoter, Dr Somi Sareo declared the 29th edition Shirui Lily National Football Tournament  open.
Before the tournament kicked off, two minute silence was observed in remembrance of 51 deceased members of UDSA.
The opening match of the tournament featured United Brother FC and Phungyar FC where United Brother FC won 2-0 thanks to Khangatar Tungshang goal in the 18th minute and late 89th minute goal by Thotngayung.
Altogether, 10 football teams including Lajong FC from Meghalaya and New Market Kohima FC from Nagaland would vie for coveted Shirui Lily Cup.
