National seminar on 'Bioeconomy from Bioresources with special reference to North Eastern Region of India' held

The Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India organized a National Seminar on 'Bioeconomy from Bioresources with special reference to North Eastern Region of India' today.
A press release issued by IBSD Imphal has stated that the institute is organising a series of programmes for the development of bioresources of NER to promote in different contexts under the leadership of Professor Pulok K Mukherjee, Director, IBSD, Imphal.
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr Rajesh S Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India, New Delhi and while speaking on the occasion, he highlighted about the various bioresources available in North Eastern Region of India and development of economy of the region using these local resources.
He mentioned that these resources should be utilized to maximum capacity to benefit the local people of the region. Dr Gokhale appreciated Prof Pulok K Mukherjee for taking up such initiatives in NER and assured all kinds of support from the Department of Biotechnology. On the occasion, Dr Gokhale also released a booklet on “Biotechnology support in North Eastern Region”.
Addressing the gathering, Devesh Deval, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, science & Technology, Tourism/ Textiles, Commerce & Industries/Planning, Govt of Manipur highlighted the efforts of IBSD in the development of bioresources in the state of Manipur to boost the economy and tourism in the region.
The press release further informed that during the programme, many speakers and experts including Dr Jubilee Purkayastha, Dr P Albino Kumar, Dr Rajkumar Tomba, Dr Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, Dr L Dinachandra Singh, Dr L Nabachandra Singh and Prof Kh Ibohal Singh shared their ideas about bioeconomy from bioresources.
The programme was attended by progressive farmers from different villages and discussed their ideas about the importance of local bioresources.
The students and scientists of IBSD also attended today's programme, added the press release.
It may be noted that IBSD is organizing such programmes as a part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” to commemorate the 75 years of India's Independence.
