SENAPATI, Dec 2: National Pollution Control Day was observed on Thursday with the theme, "Youth building momentum for climate change" by Bosco Social Service Society Maram (BSSSM) at Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram.
The National Pollution Control Day is observed to raise awareness among the people about environmental pollution and its disastrous consequences.
It is observed annually on December 2 in memory of the people who lost their lives in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The horrific industrial accident took place due to the leak of Methyl Isocyanate gas in the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant on the night of December 2–3.
The students of BSSSM also displayed placards to spread awareness on pollution.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr KO Sebastian, principal of DBC Maram highlighted the issues related to air pollution in India and abroad, dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere, toxic nature of the pollutants and their impacts on human health, modelling techniques on air pollution and climate change, assessment of air quality through modelling products.
Annice Kipgen delivered a speech on the impact of pollution on humans and animals in particular and the earth in general.
She also pointed out the role of students in controlling pollution such as- reducing use of chemicals while cleaning, avoiding burning of plastics and trash,  practicing water conservation, etc.
The event culminated with a documentary movie on the impact of pollution.
Moreover, a seven-day long NSS special camp also began on Wednesday at DBC Maram.
The camp organised by NSS units I & II of the college would be held from December 1-7, 2021.
Fr KO Sebastian flagged off the NSS special camp by hoisting the NSS flag. He also exhorted the NSS volunteers to be the agents of climate change.
During the camp, the volunteers are going to reside in their adopted villages Ramlung and Kabinam. They will be involved in community service and build momentum for climate change through awareness programmes, competitions, street plays, door-to-door awareness programmes and rallies.
John Britto A, programme officer of Unit 1 highlighted the rules of the NSS special camp and Sr Ehthel, NSS programme officer of Unit 2 proposed the vote of thanks.
