IMPHAL, Dec 4 : The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) has written to the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal to establish a National Manipuri Traditional Medicine and Research Institute.
In a letter, AIMS said that traditional health care practices prevalent since ancient times are  popular in Manipur. The State is not able to commercialise its medicinal plants which could be of high value in the international market, it opined and stated that cultivating plants with medicinal properties could replace opium  plantation. Maintaining that Manipuri traditional medicines and healing practices have been disappearing from the State rapidly, while that of Myanmar, Thailand and China are flourishing with their Governments promoting the same, the AIMS claimed that one retired Director General, Ministry of Traditional Medicine of Myanmar, Professor Aung Mying who also is the WHO regional expert in traditional medicine for Asia Pacific region spoke highly of Manipur traditional  medicines and healing systems.
The statement then urged the Union Minister to set up a National Manipuri Traditional Medicine and Research Institute in Manipur to promote traditional medicines and healing methods.
