IMPHAL, Mar 2 : Mismanagement of waste by the authorities concerned as well as people has turned a section of the Porompat DC road from Ayangpalli crossing to Central Dairy Plant into a dumping site.
Not only the roadsides are filled with filth, the middle of road is also littered with feathers of poultry, scales of fishes and disposed intestinal parts, thanks to dogs and cats.
The road which is vital for many villages in the district is plied daily by people, students and office goers including the Deputy Commissioner and the district’s Superintendent of Police.
Commuters do cover their noses but they cannot escape the stench from the “rotten road”.
Some of the locals said the smell is caused by the disposal of remains of meat, feathers and scales of fishes from the nearby stalls which sell meat, poultry and fishes. Nonetheless, they acknowledge that there is lack of proper waste disposal system and proper awareness among the people.
One of the main reasons for the filthy road is also the construction of two waste disposal pits on the side of the road near Modern College under Khurai Chingangbam Leikai Gram Panchayat area, they said, adding there is “none” to manage the waste/pits.
As there is no one to manage the pits, the waste overflows and are littered on the road, they added.
Thockchom Surchandra, president of United Porompat Baruni Road Organisation, an apex body of 16 organisations along the DC road, said the filthy state of the road stretch and mismanagement of wastes pose a health hazard to all. The authorities concerned including the DC should look into the matter and take up appropriate action, he said.
Action may be taken up against those found littering on the roadside, he said asserting that people come in vehicles late at night to dispose waste on the roadside.
Stating that the authorities concerned should engage some staff to manage the waste pits, he stressed that stalls and shops selling degradable items and meat should dispose the waste generated properly.
