Closure of Mt Koubru entry points resolved

KANGPOKPI, Apr 11 : The Committee on Protection and Preservation of Mt Koubru has announced immediate closure of all entry points to Mt. Koubru until the State Government explains why they are continuing with the survey work of the mountain despite submission of formal objections. The decision of the Committee was taken with the mandate of Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association, Kuki Inpi and CSOs of Kangpokpi.
The decision to close all the entry points to Mt Koubru was taken during a crucial meeting yesterday at Saitu village in Saitu Gamphazol sub division of Kangpokpi at the residence of Saitu chief.
This was one of the decisions taken during the meeting held yesterday.
The meeting was the first of its kind after tribe based representation was introduced in the formation and functioning of Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi and KSO Sadar Hills.
The joint meeting was attended by Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association, block level village chiefs, Kuki Inpi, Kuki Students' Organization, Kuki Women Union, Thadou Youth Association, Zillai, Gangte Students' Organization and Committee on Protection and Preservation of Mt. Koubru, etc.
According to SAHILCA general secretary Paotong Doungel, the meeting was held keeping in mind the current political issues and various Government Acts especially those that seek to undermine the tribal rights and safeguards.
In the meeting, Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association declared endorsement of Kuki Inpi resolutions adopted in its general assembly otherwise known as 'Kumbul Kithin' at Hengbung village on January 18, 2021.
It may be recalled that the general assembly or Kumbul Kithin was graced by representatives of SAHILCA and participated by all blocks of Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi and CSOs of Kangpokpi including KSO Sadar Hills, KWU Sadar Hills and endorsed by all cognate tribe organisations such as Thadou Inpi, Vaiphei People's Council, Kom Rem Union, Gangte Tribe Union, and district headquarters bodies of Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization and Kangpokpi Youth Union.
The assembly had deliberated on various pressing issues facing the district and resolved on various points to march ahead for the common good of Kangpokpi district.
One noteworthy resolution undertaken during the assembly was that all land records of the district that are yet to be handed over to DC Kangpokpi should be returned as soon as possible and that Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi and its CSOs will take all steps necessary to make it happen as the same had already been ordered by the State Government as well.
In the joint meeting at Saitu, the Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi was assigned to immediately halt all forms of unsustainable modes river excavation by use of excavating machineries such as JCB or tippers and dozers.
It was also resolved that no individual or company will be allowed to continue their excavation from Gundung river with immediate effect. However, Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi will allow labour intensive forms of river excavation for acquiring sand or stone for all local uses.
It was also resolved in the meeting that no towns or villages in Kangpokpi district shall discard wastes in the streams or rivers while maximum penalty shall be levied on defaulters by the chief or town committee chairman concerned.
