IMPHAL, Apr 12: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has submitted a petition to the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) seeking its enlistment as a party of the suo moto case taken up by the latter regarding the State Government’s War on Drugs.
Notably, State Planning Board Deputy Chairman and BJP MLA Lourembam Rameshwor, while addressing a public function held at Canchipur on April 3, stated that some Ministers, MLAs and police officers must be sincere if the Government’s War on Drugs should be successful.
Taking serious note of the BJP MLA’s statement, MPCC legal department chairman Advocate N Jayentakumar submitted a petition to the MHRC today seeking enlistment of MPCC as a party of the suo moto case.
Later speaking to media persons, MPCC general secretary S Jiten said that the petition submitted by MPCC to the MHRC would be considered on May 5.
Advocate N Jayentakumar noted that the MHRC has taken up a case after a BJP MLA indirectly hinted at possible involvement some Ministers, MLAs and police officers in smuggling drugs.
Given the fact that no drug lords or kingpins have been named to the public so far although huge consignments have been seized from different places, Congress party took serious note of what the BJP MLA stated on a public platform, he said.
Whether the MPCC would be accepted as a party of the suo moto case or not would be discussed on May 5, Jayentakumar said.
MPCC spokesman N Bhupen urged the Government to name the Ministers, MLAs and police officers who are suspected to be involved in drug cases.
