Meghalaya Government on the need to extend vaccination drive against COVID-19

SHILLONG, Apr 14: The Meghalaya state government will take up with the Centre on the need to extend the vaccination drive against COVID-19 for all teachers in the state.
The decision was made after taking into consideration the suggestion given by the heads of various schools and colleges during a meeting convened with the education department on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that many of the heads of institutions have expressed that all teachers should be vaccinated.
“The Education department has also communicated to the Health department regarding this point raised by the heads of the various institutions,” he said.
Asked, Rymbui said in fact the matter was also discussed during a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to review the COVID situation.
“Since the Government of India right now allows vaccination of only people who are 45 years and above, we from the state government will take up with the Government of India so that teachers could also be vaccinated,” he stated.
According to him, there are over 75,000 teachers in the state. To another query, the minister admitted that there is a need to vaccinate even school going children.
“…in fact the general opinion of everybody not only in India but all over the world that all the population should be vaccinated but now the problem is the availability of the vaccines…I hope the Centre will take decision at an appropriate time,” he said.
