SENAPATI , Jun 19: An interactive webinar on 'Stress Management during Covid-19 Lockdown' was organized by NSS & Research Cell of Asufii Christian Institute on June 18, 2021 for BA & BSc Final Year students.
The webinar was conducted in order to help and encourage the students in this stressful time of pandemic.
The Speaker, Ahrai Washington, MTh Counselling Psychology, UTC, Bangalore spoke on ‘Stress Management’.
He was joined by two panellists; Dr Chakho Kaya Mao, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Dr Sahiinii Veikho, Assistant Professor, Department of English, who spoke on ‘How to focus in studies while dealing with stress?’ and ‘How to overcome phone addiction?’ respectively.
Since the sudden transition from physical studies to online studies with the emergence of COVID-19 is a stressful experience for both the teachers and students, the speaker stated that “Stress management is very important to take charge of one’s mental health and reduce the impact of stress on ourselves. Although stress is inevitable, it can be effectively managed through rationalizing the faulty thinking and negative emotions. Making a conscious effort of taking care of one’s mind, body, and spirit will help reduce stress and improve many symptoms associated with mental health”.
He also stated that “social distancing does not mean social isolation. It is important to stay connected and share with friends and family members or Counsellors about the challenges and difficulties. Since COVID-19 is not going anywhere, at least not for a while, the best way is to adapt, prepare and adjust to this new normal and get through positively, realistically, rationally and with Faith in God.”
Dr Mao with much concern stated that “Lockdown is the perfect time to easily get swayed away from your studies. And so this should be the time to be even more determined to prioritise your studies as you have been missing out on the advantages of classroom learning.”
She further urged the students to create a study plan to reduce being more stressful and to inculcate the habit of studying regularly, for, in the process they would learn to study smart and develop the joy of learning.
Dr Veikho then spoke on ‘nomophobia’, a psychological condition where people have a fear of being detached from mobile phone connectivity and its root causes. Due to the present situation, smart phones have become a necessity but it has been misused highly among the students.
Therefore, he advised the students to use them wisely in order to overcome phone addiction by discovering oneself and investing time on what is productive and constructive.
The webinar was open for discussion after the talks. Students took part actively, raising doubts and queries on their personal struggles and challenges related to stress and depression to the speaker and the panellists.
NG Mary Saza,  ACI-NSS Program Officer ended the webinar by giving the vote of thanks.
