Shillong, Jun 2 : The Congress party in Meghalaya asked the state government on Wednesday to activate the disease surveillance system for auditing each and every village in view of the ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.
“We cannot have any sense of complacency. We need to have some auditing of every village. Therefore, the disease surveillance system should be activated in a much more aggressive manner to know exactly what is happening in every village of the state,” Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said after an inspection of the different government hospitals and corona care centres in the state capital.
“Is there a reason for us to worry? Are there incidents of any cases that give us reasons to believe or suspect incidents of Covid-19 in those villages? Give us a clear picture,” he added.
Sangma was accompanied by Congress legislators and officials of the health department during the day-long inspection.
The former Chief Minister said the delegation has also stressed upon the district administration that auditing every village is of crucial importance.
Stating that there is a perception that the second wave is flattening and in no time normal life is going to be restored, Sangma warned that people will later realize that the virus is in their vicinity and in the rural areas as it will come back.
“In order to ensure this doesn’t happen, the proper auditing of every village is important since we are still at war against this virus. Therefore, if the enemy is in our vicinity anywhere, we have to be very careful. Only when we know there are no more enemies hiding anywhere then we know what to do. This is one crucial aspect which we have shared with the district administration,” he said.
Earlier, the delegation inspected the newly inaugurated Covid hospital at Umsawli, Shillong Civil Hospital, the Corona Care Centre at IIM Shillong and others and also reviewed their preparedness to tackle the pandemic.
Sangma said that the team of Congress legislators would again conduct similar inspections to the various health centres at Ri Bhoi district on Thursday.
