IMPHAL, Jun 20 : The People for Animals (PFA), Manipur has stated that it has taken custody of two Himalayan black bear cubs rescued by a unit of 18 AR while they were patrolling the thick forest area under Larong Khunou, Chandel district.
The organisation, in a statement expressed delight on learning that the bear cubs were rescued after two suspected poachers, who were about to capture the cubs, fled on sighting patrolling personnel of 18 AR from a distance.
The association also shared the account of the personnel who were suspicious of foul play and closed in on to the spot before discovering the presence of bear cubs.
The cubs which were unlikely to survive on their own were brought to the camp before the Commandant of the unit, Col Ajit Khatri contacted and handed them over to Inspector of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau Border Unit, Moreh, K Brojen Singh, said PFA.
The cubs were then handed over to PFA Shelter in Pallel by K Brojem Singh yesterday evening, it said.
PFA asserted that the two cubs are able to feed on their own a bit.
They (bear cubs) will be kept in PFA shelter for two days before handing them over to Zoological Garden in Eroisemba where they will be raised until they are fit to be released in the wild, it said.
The Himalayan Black bear is an endangered species and is listed in the IUCN Red List presently, said PFA while lauding the mindful gesture of AR personnel.
