IMPHAL, Jun 21 : After being frozen for years, the work process for Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project over the Leimatak River has resumed. The project which aims at generating 66 MW power is a joint venture of the State Government and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
The project for constructing the 20m high concrete gravity dam above the river bed level is 22 km downstream of the power house of Loktak hydroelectric project and estimated to be constructed at the cost of Rs 1,300 crore.
According to a reliable source, the initial process for the construction of the power project was initiated after the State Government signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NHPC  on August 21 last year.
The source further informed that the project is to be constructed over 211.5 acres of land and a necessary identification process has been initiated.
DC Concerned is likely to submit an estimate of land compensation to be involved in acquiring 211.5 acres shortly, the source continued.
The project is now only bereft of clearance from the Public Investment Bureau (PIB) and Committee on Economic Affairs (CCE) which is of paramount importance, the source said.
To get the clearance the process of land acquisition and compensation has to be completed first and the project can start the process of providing 66 MW of power as soon as the PIB and CCE give the clearance, the source said.
Even as the project was stalled for years and as the 'Detailed Project Report' has been validated till 2022, there will be no need for preparing a new DPR (Detailed Project Report), the source added.
