IMPHAL, Jun 23 : Judo player Likmabam Sushila has become the fifth Manipuri player set to represent India in the Tokyo Games 2020 as she qualifies for the biggest sporting extravaganza thanks to continental quota.
The National Olympic Committee was informed about Sushila's qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Judo in the -48 kg category by the International Judo Federation on June 21.
Sushila and a Punjab player were in contention for the continental quota  but Sushila got the edge as she managed to secure 20 points recently in the World Judo Championship held in Hungary and amassed 1008 points in her name.
Thus Sushila became the fifth player to qualify for the mega sporting event slated to begin from July 23 to August 8 after MC Mary Kom (boxing : 51 kg), Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting : 49 kg), Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam (women's hockey) and Shanglakpam Nilakanta (men's hockey)  made it to the Indian contingent.
Shushila, born on February 1 1995, is the daughter of Likmabam Manihar Singh of Heingang Mayai Leikai.
Shusila who started playing judo from a very small age had earned many medals and accolades for Manipur and India participated in as many as 14 international judo events.
In the National arena, Sushila had won gold medals in the Senior National Judo Championship-2014, 2015 National Games held in Kerala, All India Police Judo Cluster Championship-2018 and Senior National Championship-2019 held in Visakhapatnam.
Sushila also had earned India gold medals in the Commonwealth Judo Championship held in 2010 in Singapore and Asian Youth Judo Championship-2011 held in Lebanon (with best judoka accolade) and a silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Scotland. She had also participated in the Incheon Asian Games held in 2014.
Sushila had also earned gold medal in the 2016 Asian Games held in Shillong and Guwahati, a silver medal in the Asian Judo Open World Ranking Event held in 2018 in Hong Kong, a gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championship held in India, a gold medal in the 8 South Asian Judo Championship held in Nepal in 2018, a gold medal in the Asian Judo Open 2019 held in Hong Kong, gold medal in the Commonwealth Judo Championship-2019 held in England. She is currently undergoing Olympic training in France.
