IMPHAL, Jun 7
The Manipur Amateur Boxing Association (MABA) has sought clarification from the authorities concerned over the basis of allocation of Khelo India Centres (KICs) across the 16 districts of  the State.
The MABA in a press statement expressed happiness over the announcement for opening of 16 KICs, one each of a specific discipline in all the 16 districts but demanded a clear explanation of the basis of the allocation of these centres.
The State used to have two boxing coaches under the Youth Affairs and Sports Department earlier and with the demise of one coach in 1995, vacancy left was never filled and only one coach was handed the sole responsibility. And since the retirement of the other coach in 2016, no regular coach has been appointed till date, MABA said with displeasure over the lack of attention from concerned authorities towards the matter.
Despite the given circumstance, boxing continue to be one of the most popular sports in Manipur and with the efforts of the association and district associations, the State has produced more that 80 international boxers and many among the list have been honoured with prestigious awards including Arjun Award, Padma Bushan, Padmashree, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Vibushan for their outstanding performances, the MABA said. In spite of its popularity and underlying potential across the State, only one KIC for boxing ( in Churachandpur) has been allocated, it remarked and demanded all concerned to make it public the basis of allocation of KICs. MABA also went on to demand all concerned to ensure allocation of at least 4 or 5 KIC for boxing discipline across the State.
