IMPHAL, Jun 9
The Manipur Olympic Association has appealed to the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports to review the identification of Khelo India Centres (KICs) in 16 districts of Manipur.
An emergency meeting of the executive council of the Manipur Olympic Association was held this morning at 9 am to discuss the opening of 16 KICs across districts of the State, said a press release issued by MOA.
The association, through the release, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India for providing an opportunity to establish 16 KICs for 16 disciplines- Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Badminton, Cycling, Fencing, Hockey, Judo, Rowing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Football and traditional sports.
However, the State Department of Youth Affairs and Sports seems not to have studied properly the criteria of opening the KIC as well as Centre of Excellence under Khelo India Scheme, it said.
The very move of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports has drawn many criticism from different quarters, it said while adding that the Department should have consulted the State's apex sports association in identifying the centres so that the programme run smoothly.
