Third wave ? Again ? Seriously ? – wait, "I would say that a new wave is unlikely, but even if it comes, it will be quite small compared to the second and first waves. Being alert is good, but being alarmed is not," Dr T Jacob John, former Professor at the Christian Medical College in Vellore city told Anadolu Agency. I really want to believe him but the other sources also warn about the third wave, so–take care.
At a time when India has barely put behind the horrors of the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, Maharashtra has sounded the alert for the third wave with Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 being held responsible for the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The Delta variant had been first reported from Maharashtra last year. Now, Delta Plus variant has been detected even though it has not been classified as a variant of concern. The Delta Plus variant was first detected in Europe in March this year. It has been isolated in some samples in India and around 10 other countries. Delta Plus is a new version of its mutant variant Delta.
India till today has given 36.9 crore doses with just 7.03 crore fully vaccinated, and this is just 5.1% of the population. With this speed, we are not going to be able to fight the third wave. So, another vaccine has been made so important – behavioral vaccine-behavioural vaccines include appropriate wearing of face masks, practicing Covid-appropriate hygiene and maintaining adequate physical-social distance. And if you are fully vaccinated then you are one of the 11.9% of the world’s population who are fully vaccinated, lucky right ?
There has been some speculation about the third wave being even stronger than the second. However, this is not something that can be predicted. Usually, it is expected that every fresh wave would be weaker than the previous one. That is because the virus, when it emerges, has a relatively free run, considering that the entire population is susceptible. During its subsequent runs, there would be a far lower number of susceptible people because some of them would have gained immunity.
This logic, however, has been turned on its head in India’s case. When the number of cases began declining in India after mid-September last year, only a very small fraction of the population had gotten infected. There was no reason for the disease spread to have slowed down, considering that such a large proportion of the population was still susceptible. The reasons for the five-month continuous decline in cases in India is still not very well understood.
And since the second wave was expected to be weaker than the first, many were fooled into believing that the pandemic was nearing its end. With the lessons learnt in a very painful manner, there are now suggestions that the third wave might be even stronger. So Dr. T Jacob John from my first para, I might have to not really go with your calm confidence.
I guess, let the Government try their best for their Covid vaccine. But for you and I, it is the behavioral vaccine that has to be used religiously. The announcement of the new micro-containment is the best idea so far. At this point, the only opinion I could 'free market' is – stay home to fight the war, and follow the instructions.
I have got vaccinated – have you ?
