IMPHAL, Jul 19
The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) has extended best wishes to the 5 State athletes who will be competing in various events at the Tokyo Olympics.
5 players from Manipur making it to the Indian Contingent despite its small geographical area is no ordinary thing, said AMSU with pride in a statement.
It may be noted that MC Mary Kom (boxing), Likmabam Sushila (judo), Pukhrambam Shushila (hockey), Shanglakpam Nilakanta (hockey) and Saikhom Mirabai (weightlifting) will be competing in their respective events at the Tokyo Games. The State has a legacy of producing world class athletes and as such the State is touted often as the powerhouse of sports, it said.
AMSU however lamented that the State lacks encouragement and support towards sports persons until they earn spotlight mostly on their own. It also expressed hope that a plenty of world class players and olympians will emerge in no time if the State Government gives due emphasis to support players and ensure adequate and proper infrastructure requirements.
While greeting the players for making it to the biggest sporting event of the world, AMSU also exuded confidence that the players will give their best and make the country and the State proud.
