IMPHAL, Jul 26 : MPCC general secretary P Saratchandra has appealed the Government to consider a new approach in controlling the pandemic and frame new rules instead of extending the curfew.
Speaking to the media, he said the Government had announced an intensified curfew in the entire State from July 18 for 10 days to contain the virus. However, there has been no sign of respite from the pandemic with daily tally crossing the 1000 barrier everyday and daily fatalities in double digits.
This has raised serious questions regarding the effectiveness of the curfew in controlling the pandemic and it should also be noted that the curfew has had a serious impact on the poor and daily wagers. He added that it is high time the Government examines how the poor and daily wagers will survive after being out of work for such a long time due to the restrictions imposed by the Government.
States like Delhi and Maharashtra which had worse positivity rates than Manipur have now recovered better and now their positivity rate has lowered and recovery rates are up, he added.
P Saratchandra suggested that instead of extending the curfew that is going to end tomorrow, the Government needs to consider a new approach in battling the pandemic that has been ravaging the State when most part of the country has recovered from it.
He suggested that CSOs and NGOs should also be roped in to provide mass awareness about COVID-19 to the masses.
