India reports 45,083 new cases, Kerala accounts for 70 pc

India’s daily caseload crossed the 40,000-mark for the fourth day in a row as the country saw 45,083 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data.
Five States accounted for 89.17 per cent of the total cases, with Kerala contributing 31,265 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Maharashtra with 4,831 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,551 cases, Andhra Pradesh with 1,321 cases and Karnataka with 1,229 cases.
India saw 460 people succumb to the virus in the past 24 hours. Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (153), followed by Maharashtra with 126 deaths.
A total of 35,840 patients recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours, taking India's recovery rate to 97.53 per cent. The total recoveries stand at 3,18,88,642 across the country.
In the last 24 hours, active cases increased by 8,783, taking the active caseload to 3,68,558.
India has administered a total of 73,85,866 vaccine doses in the past 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 63,09,17,927.
A total of 17,55,327 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
COVID SURGE IN KERALA
Kerala continues to see a surge in daily infections, with the State accounting for 69.35 per cent of the new Covid-19 cases.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the decision to impose night curfew in the State from Monday to contain the spread of Covid-19. The curfew timing will be from 10 pm to 6 am.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan also cautioned the State's citizens about the third wave of Covid-19. "We need to be more cautious in the coming days as the third wave is looming. We need to prepare for the third wave," he said.  India Today
