IMPHAL, Sep 20 : Union Minister of State for Edu-cation and External Affairs Dr RK Ranjan has asked the authorities concerned and teachers fraternity in the State to emphasize on skill deve-lopment while imparting education.
Speaking as the chief guest at a felicitation programme of National Tea- cher Awardee, 2021 Ning-mareo Shimray which was organized by Department of Education (S) at Hotel Classic Grande, Chingmeirong today, the MoS conveyed that the Central Government is targeting to set up 28 new Universities in the country that will prioritise on skill development.
He stated that the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 gives thrust to create an education system that enhances problem solving skills and employability skills.
Saying that the Central Government has been laying special emphasis on the Northeast region, Ranjan maintained that the Prime Minister is backing the idea of inculcating nationalism and patriotism to the students through inclusion of chapters on the unsung heroes from Northeast region in the school curriculum.
While highlighting that his visit to the State is to interact with those teachers who bagged the National Teacher Award, the Union Minister conveyed that he would visit Ukhrul Higher Secondary School where Ningmareo Shimray works.
He also said that the first priority for developing infrastructure will be given to those schools which produce National Teacher and State Teacher Awardees.
Informing that only 6,000 teachers from the entire country applied for the National Teacher Award while only 50 teachers applied for the State Teacher Award this year, he lamented that a meager number from the teachers' fraternity applying for the teachers awards is not a healthy sign.
The Union Minister, while stressing on the prospects and details of NEP, 2020, urged the teachers  to digest all the features and guidelines included in the New Education Policy.
Delivering his presidential address, Education Minister S Rajen asked teachers in the State to work with sincerity and dedication.
Stressing on the NEP, 2020, the Minister conveyed that a committee headed by the Education Commissioner has been formed for productive implementation of the NEP in Manipur.
He added that certain programmes and activities pertaining to NEP 2020 are also on the pipelines for implementation and claimed that Rs 2 crore will also be sanctioned for distributing tablets and smartphones to the college students belonging to BPL category .
The function was also attended by Education (S) Director L Nandakumar. Apart from felicitating Ningmareo Shimray, nine other teachers who received the State Teacher Award recently were also felicitated.
