IMPHAL, Sep 21: All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU) Central Committee has demanded the Government of Assam to confer the status of Associate Official Language to Manipuri language.
AAMSU Central Committee expressed their disappointment with the statement of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who stated that  the number of people who speak Manipuri language in Assam are too few to accord it the status of Associate Official Language, a press release issued by AAMSU Central Committee informed today.  It further stated that not only is Manipuri language taught in Assam University, Silchar and various other universities across India but it is a scheduled language as per the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and is also a language recognized by the Sahitya Akademi.
Consequently, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's statement which disregarded the demand for Associate Official Language status simply based on the number of speakers of the Manipuri language, comes across as insulting, the press release added. AAMSU Central Committee resolved to carry on with their demand until Manipuri language receives the same status as accorded to Assamese, Bodo and Bengali languages.
