SENAPATI, Jan 24
The Naga Women Union (NWU) has appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chief Electoral Officer, CEO, Manipur State to review its earlier election notification of January 8, 2022, which scheduled the date of poll for the 9 Hill Assembly Constituencies on February 27 (Sunday).
"NWU would like to register our sentiments of hurt to the ECI and Chief Electoral Officer, CEO, Manipur State, for setting the date of polling on Sunday (February 27, 2022), for the  9 Hill ACs of Manipur  through its notification vide its Press Note No ECI/PN//2022 dated January 8, 2022", said NWU in a release.
It stated that India as a secular State whereby social pluralism is fortified by the unique constitution, should uphold the principles of the Indian Constitution in letter and in spirit.
The Union also stated that the people residing in the 9 hill ACs are predominantly Christians and fixing poll date on Sunday is against the religious sentiment of the minority Christian community in general and the communities of the said nine constituencies in particular.
NWU further stated that respecting the sentiments of minority religion will preserve the sanctity of Indian Constitution and re-arrangement of polling date will serve the interest of every citizen in Manipur.
The nine hill ACs are: 46- Saikul (ST), 51- saitu (ST), 55- Tipaimukh (ST), 56- Thanton (ST), 57- 50-Kangpokpi Henglep (ST), 58- Churachandpur (ST), 59-Saikot (ST) and 60- Singhat (ST).
