One day consultation on 'LGBTQI+ Social Protection and Human Rights in Manipur' held

IMPHAL, Jan 25: A one day consultation on LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex) Social Protection and Human Rights in Manipur was held today at the conference hall of the Institute of Cooperative Management.
The consultation programme was jointly organised by Human Rights Law Network ( Manipur), All Manipur Nupi Manbi Association (AMANA), Maruploi Foundation , Transgender Health & Wellness Centre Manipur and All Manipur Transman Association & Empowering Trans Ability.
Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Meihoubam, Director, Human Rights Law Network Manipur said that the consultation programme has been organised to discuss the problems faced by the transgenders in Manipur and to address and solve such problems accordingly.
He maintained that there are certain laws which have many provisions focused on the wellbeing and upliftment of the transgenders however it is associated with many shortcomings as well.
During today's consultation programme, the stakeholders and resource persons will discuss how the specific laws which are in place can tackle the problems of the transgenders in the State and what measures can be taken up in this regard from the Government's side, he added.
He further stated that resolutions taken today will be submitted to the authorities concerned to take up necessary steps accordingly.
If needed, legal help will be sought to actualise such measures, he continued.
Keisham Pradipkumar, former member of Manipur State Commission for Protection of Child Rights was the moderator of the programme and many resource persons spoke on different topics today.
