IMPHAL, Jan 25 : Even as anticipation ran high that the BJP may announce the list of candidates after the Central Election Committee meeting held at the party's headquarters at New Delhi today, sources informed The Sangai Express that the candidate list for Manipur is most likely to be announced on January 27.
When The Sangai Express contacted State BJP president A Sharda Devi today evening, she said that though the candidate list has been finalised, it will be some time before it is announced.
Sharda however added that the candidate names will surely be announced once the election notification is issued.
The State BJP president further said that intensive and extensive surveys have been conducted earlier and added that the inputs from the surveys have been taken into consideration. The surveys have proven to be very effective, she added.
Works Minister Th Biswajit informed The Sangai Express that the list has been worked out according to the merit of those seeking the party's ticket and added that there is no guarantee that all sitting BJP MLAs will be given the party's ticket.
With 2/3/4 BJP intending candidates in almost all the Assembly Constituencies,  the BJP list is perhaps the most awaited ahead of the coming polls, especially with the Congress and the NPP having announced the first list of their candidates some days back.
A number of prominent political leaders from Manipur, including Chief Minister N Biren, State BJP president A Sharda Devi, Works Minister Th Biswajit were in Delhi for the CEC meeting, said sources and added that all three returned to Imphal today evening in a chartered flight.
Sources from Delhi said that the BJP discussed in detail some ‘problematic’ Assembly Constituencies over ticket allocation, particularly where new entrants to the party have been admitted. Attempts to contact any of the intending candidates drew blank.
With anticipation running high that the candidates list may be announced today, security was tightened at the State BJP office at Nityaipat Chuthek.
Similar tight security has been place at the office since the last few days, after the Congress and the NPP announced the first list of their candidates.
The failure to announce the list of candidates even late in the evening today ran counter to earlier anticipations that the list may be issued today.
Earlier in the evening today, India.com reported that the BJP is likely to finalize and announce the names of the remaining candidates for Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab at the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting on Tuesday. The list for Manipur is also expected to be finalised. The CEC meeting is currently underway at the party headquarters in the National capital.
A high-level BJP meeting was also held on Monday to discuss remaining candidates for the coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, and as per sources, around 80 sitting MLAs are likely to be dropped and seats changed for almost a dozen overall.
The core committee meeting was held in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attending. The Central Election Committee (CEC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Tuesday to give the final approval to the list.
So far, the BJP has announced 194 candidates for Uttar Pradesh and 34 candidates for Punjab, however, no list of candidates has been released for Manipur as of now. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur will be completed in seven phases with UP being the first to go to the polls on February 10.
Polling in Manipur will be held in two phases on February 27 and March 3 whereas the voting will take place in Uttarakhand and Goa on February 14 and Punjab will go to polls on February 20.
The counting of votes for all five poll-bound States will take place on March 10.
