IMPHAL, Oct 3: Five student organisations have appealed the Government to release the students of Imphal College arrested by the police without any conditions.
A joint statement signed by representatives of AIMS, AMSU, DESAM, KSA and MSF released today said students of various colleges had staged protests on September 29 following the Government notification to cancel the college election which was scheduled for October 6.
The five student bodies held talk with the Education Minister and an amicable solution was reached. The student bodies assured the students of various colleges and the protest was called off while the Government released students arrested during the protest, added the statement.
However, the police started looking for some particular students of Imphal College and arrested some after a video of an unfortunate incident between protesting students and some people who were on their way to Imphal Airport went viral on social media which is very unfortunate, added the statement.
Meanwhile, 20 students of Imphal College issued a press release today demanding immediate release of students arrested by the police.
The press release claimed that the unfortunate incident that happened in front of Imphal College on September 29 was a result of the particular individual showing blatant disrespect to the protest and added that the students were not at fault. The students were protesting in a democratic manner and were in no way disrupting the flow of traffic when the person, who claimed to be on his way to the airport, started shouting against the protest.
All preparation for conducting college elections were completed in all colleges after a meeting of college Principals resolved to conduct the election on October 6, but a meeting was called by the Directorate of Higher Education for college teachers on September 26 regarding a possible cancellation of the scheduled election.
However, no discussion regarding cancellation took place in the meeting, added the statement.
It is unfortunate that the Government was citing student protest for cancellation of the college election as there were no protests in colleges prior to the notification for cancellation of college election was issued, added the statement.
As such the Directorate of Higher Education should bear the responsibility for the incident of September 29 and the State Government should release the arrested students without any condition and in good time, asserted the students.
