Benefits of beekeeping highlighted

KANGPOKPI, Oct 4: One day training cum interaction programme on scientific methods of Beekeeping for doubling of farmers' income was held today at Kangchup Chiru village in Kangpokpi district today.
The programme was organised by Action for Social Justice Organisation, Imphal as a part of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Honeybee and Pollinators taken up by the College of Agriculture (COA), Central Agricultural University (CAU).
Dean of College of Agriculture, CAU, Professor Indira Sarangthem; Chairman of Kangchup Chiru Village, Tr Jacob; Principal Investigators of AICRP on Honeybee and Pollinators, Dr SM Haldhar and Dr Kh Ibohal graced the inaugural function as the presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Indira Sarangthem expressed that the farmers can start a venture or startups through beekeeping (apiculture).
She further informed that honey derived from honeybee species 'Apis Cerana' found in Northeast India is highly nutritious and is of good quality as compared to honey produced in other States across the country.
She further appealed to the unemployed youths and college students to take up apiculture at the community level  to promote the same and generate income out of it.
She went on to state that projects on cultivation of rapeseed to extract oil and apiculture at Andro area taken up by CAU has been a great success.
Such projects have led to large scale production of rapeseed oil and honey, she added.
With regards to the various projects available under CAU, she appealed to all to avail the benefits of these projects to enhance production and strive for development.
During the programme, Dr Kh Ibohal gave a powerpoint presentation on the theme of the programme and enlisted the multiple benefits of apiculture.
He appealed to the farmers to process the raw honey at the honey processing unit of CAU.
Apart from honey production, apiculture also helps in increasing pollination thereby promoting healthy growth of fruits and flowers.
Dr SM Haldhar and Bee professional, Arambam Suchitra spoke as resource persons during the technical session and interacted with the farmers regarding their queries.
Certificates were also distributed to the farmers who attended the programme.
