IMPHAL, Oct 5: A farmers' sensitization programme on natural farming cum distribution of agricultural equipment and seeds was held at Rajarshi Bhagyachandra Skill Development Centre today.
The programme was jointly organised by the Central Agricultural University (CAU) and Seva Bharati Manipur.
Prominent member of Akhil Bharatiya Karyakarmi Mandal, V Bhagaiah; CAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Anupam Mishra; Dean of College of Agriculture, CAU, Professor Indira Sarangthem and Seva Bharati Manipur Secretary, Khwairakpam Rajen graced the programme as the presidium members.
Speaking in connection with the objective of organising the programme, Professor Indira Sarangthem has informed that the programme is aimed at raising awareness among the public on natural farming methods which are eco-friendly and which can be implemented without much expense.
It is a well known fact that use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural processes degrade the fertility of the soil thereby posing threats to the natural environment, she added.
She maintained that plans are underway to organise similar programmes in Imphal West and Bishnupur districts to promote natural farming methods and to raise awareness among farmers to implement such methods effectively by providing the required agricultural inputs.
Agricultural inputs were distributed to around 100 farmers who participated in the programme.
