IMPHAL, Oct 5 : Raising demand to grant  Scheduled Tribe (ST) tag to Meetei/Meitei, several women vendors staged a sit-in protest at Pishum Keithel today.
During the protest demonstration staged under the aegis of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM), banners with inscriptions "Save Meetei/Meitei, Save Manipur '' and "Send the recommendations sought by the Centre to enlist Meetei/Meitei in the ST list of the Constitution" were displayed.
At the protest site, a member of STDCM said that even the survival of Meeteis/Meiteis is becoming a great challenge as the ethic group  does not have any Constitutional safeguards.
Saying that Meetei/Meitei fulfils all the criteria to be recognised as a Scheduled Tribe, he added that the ethnic and indigenous group is  allowed to settle only on meagre eight per cent of the total land area of the State legitimately.
"Identifying Meetei/Meitei as ST is the only way to solve the problems being faced by the ethnic group," he added.
