Speaking at the occasion, RK Amarjit Singh, IFS DFO/Central informed that the campaign is a part of the ongoing Wildlife Week Celebration, 2022 focusing especially on migratory birds.
He continued that migratory birds have started arriving in the wetlands of the State for roosting during the winter season. He also added that hunting of these birds by using traps, poisonous chemicals, air guns etc used to be common in the past years and the same appears to have started today. Forest guards, in the recent past, had seized various traps and the same is alarming.
He appealed to all, especially the youth clubs and civil bodies, to join hands and save the migratory guests by protecting them and giving them safe habitats throughout their stay in Manipur during this winter. He also cautioned that stringent action shall be taken up if anybody is found indulging in trapping and killing wild birds.
Kh Brajesh Singh, President of the Wildlife Explorers Manipur informed the Forest Field Staff and youths to remain active and prevent trapping and hunting of the migratory birds.
He also spoke about the science of migration of birds from the western part of the globe due to rapid decrease in temperature during the winter months.
He further informed of the different flyways of the world and the various requirements of the migratory birds to cope up with the harsh environmental conditions that the birds face during their flight.
The officials informed that the aim of the loudspeaker campaign is to create mass awareness to the public and sensitize them on the need to protect and conserve the birds and their habitats.
