Two murder convicts get lifer

IMPHAL, Oct 6: Ningthoujam Kumar and Ningthoujam Yaima, both belonging to Thanga Karang Chingjeng have been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Wahengbam Laksha Singh.
The Court of Session Judge, Bishnupur convicted Ningthoujam Kumar Singh (67) s/o N Megho Singh and Ningthoujam Yaima Singh (56) S/o Matumba Singh on September 28.  
They were produced before the same Court for sentence hearing today.
W Tonen, Session Judge, Bishnupur sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life and slapped a fine of Rs 5000 each.
Ningthoujam Kumar and Ningthoujam Yaima murdered Wahengbam Laksha by chopping the victim’s throat with a knife while watching Lai Haraoba at Karang Khuman Pokpa Laibung on June 26, 2006 at about 10 pm under Moirang police station.
During the sentence hearing, Additional PP L Danny Meitei submitted that the offence is a serious one and prayed that convicts be awarded maximum punishment.
On the other hand, the defence counsel submitted that the present offence/crime is the first in the lives of both the convicts and also they are having their own families.
The defence counsel prayed the Court to award minimum punishment to both the convicts.
It was further submitted that Ningthoujam Kumar Singh is a diabetes and BP patient while Ningthoujam Yaima Singh is also having jaundice.
The defence counsel prayed the Court for giving direction to the Superintendent, MCJ, Sajiwa to provide medical facilities to the two convicts.
After hearing the Additional PP as well the defence counsel, the Court sentenced both the convicts to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
The Court also directed Superintendent, Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa to ensure that the convicts are provided medical aid from time to time so that they can live with good health.
The convicts were arrested on July 1, 2006. During interrogation, convicts admitted that they murdered Laksha with a knife near Karang Khumanpokpa Laibung on June 26, 2006 at about 10 pm.
The convicts also disclosed that when they were drinking alcohol in a vendor near the Laibung, Laksha came and called them out which resulted in a fight.
Thereafter Laksha ran away towards a shop cum hotel where they caught him and slashed his neck with a knife.
The knife used in committing the crime was also recovered at the instance of convicts.
