IMPHAL, Oct 6: Various primary weavers co-operative societies under Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Co-operative Society Ltd (AWAS) have  accused certain individuals of misusing AWAS solely to earn money.
Ngangbam Nungshi, secretary, Soibam Leikai Dyeing & Weaving Cooperative Society Ltd laid down this accusation during a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul today.
She shared that various Primary Weavers Co-operative Society in the State came together to form the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Co-operative Society Ltd. She added that these societies voted and selected the board members of this apex body.
She went on to emphasize its importance as an implementing agency for the handicraft and handloom sector. Unfortunately, this apex body has become a way for some individuals to earn money, she asserted.
Ngangbam Nungshi further stated that failure to properly implement the schemes and projects for weavers launched by the Indian Govt had led to delay in submission of Utilisation Certificates (UC). As a result, no more schemes/projects were allocated for the weavers, she asserted.
Citing these issues, she made an earnest appeal to the concerned Minister and department to look into the matter promptly.
